Although not from Swansea, SHRAPNEL from a few miles away in Briton Ferry were probably one of the most well supported punk bands to come out of the area in the early eighties.
Formed in 1981 by mates Paul Summers ( Guitar ), Geoff James ( Drums ), Andrew Kingdom ( Vocals ) and Mark ‘Hitla’ Rees ( Bass ) they set about doing a few gigs in the local area before Andrew was replaced on vocals by Paul’s twin brother, Stewart.
The new line up set about doing gigs throughout South Wales starting with a support slot to Mansfield band Riot Squad at Cardiff’s Central Hotel in 1982. By February of the next year they recorded their first demo an 8 track effort recorded in Tonypandy which even today stands out as classic eighties sing-a-long punk rock !
After being advertised for sale in Sounds for 80p plus the obligatory SAE they soon ended up getting offers of gigs across the country including a few gigs in Northern Ireland, a deal was then struck to re-record the album but nothing came of it so ‘Hitla’ left and was replaced by Richard Cole in 1984.
A third demo was then recorded & engineered with the help of Bruce from the Subhumans one track of which appeared on the ‘ We Wont Be Your Fucking Poor ‘ LP on Conflicts Mortarhate label. More gigs followed supporting many of the ‘leading lights’ of the anarcho punk scene but again the bass duties remained unstable with Andy Bull replacing Richard and Dai Joseph replacing Andy !
More gigs followed with the addition of Gaz Landeg as second vocalist but again this line up didn’t last
In September 1986 a fourth demo was recorded for a split ep with Pontypridd band Symbol of Freedom who’s drummer Steve Bluemer financed the ep on his own label and who joined the band later as bass player after Dai left.
A second guitarist was also added, Ivor White from Bridgend beefed up the new style Shrapnel and more gigs were undertaken with Chumbawamba & Culture Shock and a second split ep was recorded for Newport label Words of Warning with Scottish band Toxic Ephex.
An ill fated tour of the UK with San Fransico band Christ on Parade proved to much and the band fell apart playing their last gig in Swansea University in 1988
After Shrapnel, Stewart & Paul played alongside original vocalist Andrew in London band the Duvals, Paul then going on to play guitar in Ten Benson and the brothers are now running a successful tour management company called ‘Totally Tidy Tours’ and also do the odd DJ stint as the Unemployable Welsh Scum !
Hitla went onto be a tour manager for band’s like Snuff.
